A long trip to Machu Pucchu Jul 13, 2011
Going to Machu Picchu is a must-do if you're in Peru and in Cusco. However to get there you have to take a few cars and a train to finally arrive.

First you need to go to Cusco, if you're not there already. Second ask your clerk about a car that can take you to the train station in Urubamba, it's a 2-hour trip over there so you have to hire someone to take you, or go to a travel agency, you'll find plenty of these and they all offer the same so be careful with the prices and the people. The recommendation is to leave the city of Cusco very early in the morning, around 4am so you'll arrive aprox. 6:am to Urubamba.

Third, after you arrive to Urubamba or before, get your train tickets. Probable they'll offer you the whole trip to Machu Picchu, which is a good option because it saves you from having to the whole booking of the tickets, but it may be more expensive. Also try to make them as early as possible as the train takes 1.5 hours to get to Machu Picchu Pueblo ( the town of Machu Picchu)

Next, when you get to the Machu Picchu Pueblo, you'll have to go through an handcraft market, but avoid stopping there as it will take you some time to see it all and is better to do it when you're leaving to Urubamba. You'll have hope on a bus that takes you up the mountain to Machu Picchu. It takes around half an hour to go all the way up.

Finally, at the top you'll be left at the entrance, next to it there's a place to leave your belongings for only S/.5.00

BUT, it only allows a certain amount of things, you can ask for a plastic bag and you can fill it with things as long as you can close it after.

I hope you find these tips helpful and you have a great time in Cusco.

Well cuzco isnt a day trip sort of thing. First off the flights only take off early in the morning. Then you have to get used to the elevation. And the train too machu picchu takes about 4 hrs and also leaves early in the morning and then comes back later at night. Id say youd need at least 2 -3 days to properly see cuzco. Itd be better if you doing when you have time and also during their dry season may- sept (roughly) peruvian summers are really wet. And im sure the mudslides in the bus up mountain isnt fun.
