Machalilla Vacation Guide
The National park of Machalilla is a protected area, specially visited during the whales watching season (Jun - Sept). Also its beaches and cliffs are similar to Galapagos’ ones. It’s a tropical dry forest with plants: cacti, figs, kapok tree; animals: howler monkeys, anteaters, iguanas, birds, pelicans, boobies. Great to visit in July. 24oC average temperature
Of course it's not the Galapagos, but Galapagos are expensive.
How to reach it: Go to Puerto Lopez and from there you can take a bus to “Los Frailes”, at the entrance of the park have to pay for the entrance $2(locals), $15(foreigners), then start to walk 3km (30min) to arrive to the beach, good idea to have snacks. Other way to avoid the walking is renting a bike ($5 daily) or by mototaxi to take you there and pick up you ($6-7)
The park has many attractions: Isla de la Plata in front of Puerto López, beach “Los Frailes”, archeological sites “Agua Blanca”, “Salango”, and Puerto Rico & Puerto Cayo beaches.
Be aware that you have to pay a fee for every attraction or buy a ticket that includes all of them.
