Turkish influence brings a beautiful touch of history

There isn't much to see in Skopje. The city has a run down feel, with the parks overgrown and rubbish strewn along the sidewalk. People are friendly though and life is bubbles through in unexpected corners. The first place we came to was an ancient Turkish bath, which now houses the art museum. It has been converted beautifully, so you can still appreciate the high domed roof and latticeworks, while plain white walls show off the art to its best effect. The exhibits are mainly modern art and s...

Imagine being surrounded by mountains everywhere you look and the further you are the bluer they appear. Welcome to Macedonia.  A mountainous region where there is still a strong unique cultural identity. From the moment you get off at the airport you see a sign "The Alexander the Great airport". Once you have seen this sign you know that you are in for an experience that will leave a huge impression on you. The airport is located in the capital city Skopje. Skopje is an up and co...

One of my favorite places to travel to. Their money is still in Dinar, so to make a long story short, affordable! The women, well lets say that there must be something in the water there. But for sight seeing, Birth place of Alexander the Great, birth place of Mother Terresa. A lot of history in this little country, I highly recommend Skopje, and staying at the Holiday Inn.

Wonderful Ohrid

Ohrid is a stunning place to visit. I remember everyone telling me about Ohrid and how special it is. Maybe cynicism comes with age but it really is beautiful. Everyone was spot on about Ohrid.Ohrid is UNESCO protected and there exists artifacts from this region from 5000BC.  We arrived in Ohrid very early in the morning to avoid the heat  (high 40 degrees!). The drive is great, the scenery is splendid.  The first thing we did was go to Sv Naum chuch. Sv Naum was a must see fo...

Creepiest Train Station Ever
posted by:
Nov 09, 2006 - Nov 10, 2006
Skopje, Macedonia... just bussing in and seeing the quality of roads, finished buildings and other fine modern establishments proved to us continually how behind albania was. It felt like we had crossed into a rich, well off and balanced country. We had the same feeling when we visited Montenegro, and it was re-enforced again, Albania had a long way to go. So seeing all of that, pulling into the dreary bus/train station we were suprised to see the state of it. It was like a ghost town, sure w...

Hong Kong -› Xiamen, China -› ...
Setting off from Hong Kong in Aug 1992, 2 days after turning 22, I traveled China, Mongolia, Russia, Scandinavia, the Baltics, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, returning to Hong Kong in July 1993. Apart from Athens/Cairo, I never set foot on an airplane during this year-long walkabout. Before the days of digital cameras, internet, and mobile phones, this solo adventure was as much a discovery of myself as it was about these 31 countries. Many of them, like me, have long since changed.

Ohrid is absolutely beautiful!!! Locals are extremely friendly and hospitable. It is very affordable. The lake is huge, it very much looked like sea :) It is very clear and great to swim in, though cold. Beaches could use some fixing up, the water is a little inaccessible due to rocks. All in all, I would definitely go back, this time by car though :) Check out some pics...

Heraclea

What I love about travelling is the opportunity to see places of wonder that sound too good to be true. You think this can't exist it's pure fiction ,but the world has wonderful way to surprise us. Heraclea is an ancient town founded by Phillip the II (Alexander the Great dad) and dates back to 359 BC. To see this wonderful town even in ruins was magical. As this is not yet quite well known there is not the usuall queues which is refreshing.Walking around Heraclea was a major highlight ...
