Mabie Forest Dumfries Reviews
Mabie Forest Apr 10, 2010
Mabie Forest is an area of Forestry Commission land outside Dumfries in southern Scotland. It has areas of pine forest and deciduous forest. The forest is on hilly land above Dumfries, with lovely views of the town and across farm land and sphagnum moss bogs to the Solway Firth (which is a Scottish word meaning estuary). The hillside is dotted by burns (streams) babbling down between the trees.
I am sure there is a lot of interesting wildlife in the forest, although to be honest, the fauna of mixed woodland is not a real specialist subject of mine. I certainly heard a lot of birdsong and saw some bumblebees and butterflies. The fields below the woods were full of lambs and calves – this is a nice time of year to go, because the trees are just budding. Once you are a few minutes outside the car park, you have left any crowds behind and have the place to yourself.
It is possible to hire a mountain bike for the day here. There are also toilets. I suspect there is a cafe somewhere, but we went off for fish and chips on the coast so I couldn’t swear to that. I would be astonished if you couldn’t get ice cream in summer.
Admission is free, but there is a £2 parking fee.
