A great choice for the backpacker Feb 09, 2009
I've stayed at Mingtown a number of times now, and I still love the location. Not 5 minutes walk from People's Square, you can get to pretty much anywhere in Shanghai within 30-45 minutes by subway. Better yet, there's so much to do within 10-15 minutes walking distance from Mingtown that you might not even need the subway. Mingtown is located adjacent to the Marriot, which is a huge building, so I've never had trouble finding it. It also has a cozy lounge with a bar/diner if you want to eat or pre-party. Be forewarned that if you visit in the winter it's going to be chilly because the bathrooms are connected by hallways that are open to the outside air. An odd design, but I was always able to keep warm once in bed.
