une belle journee à Lyon (France Part-2)

My second stop in France on this trip is Lyon. For couple of days my friend and I discuss about this trip, either we go to Lyon or Avignon. Due to the unpredictable weather, we decided it to be Lyon. We chose Lyon because it is nearer from Grenoble and we can come back on the same day. Moreover Avignon is further then Lyon and we unable to get a hotel there. Therefore, Avignon has to wait. We bought our tickets in advance and we packed light for the trip. We only planed a day in Lyon. So I ta...

This flute will take you on an adventure
posted by:
Sep 14, 2006 - May 03, 2008
As we stopped somewhere on the way to Lyon for a breakfast of sugary corn flakes and fresh cream, Malte offered me a flute he had been working on, but of a different kind. This flute was called a fujaka and being about my arms length was played with three holes. Trying to play this flute had a completely different feeling and I could see by Malte's expression that my playing wasn't so sweet as it had been on Malte's flute the day before. 'I don't think this is your flute...' he said as he rea...

Good coffee and a beautiful city - Geneva with a pulse

Lyon is a beautiful, beautiful city. Having just come from Geneva it didn't strike me as all that different really, except that the average age was about 20 years younger, people didn't have that I've-just-come-from-a-funeral look to them, and there was a wonderful 'joie de vivre' which was sorely missing in Geneva. Apart from that, Lyon and Geneva are similarly attractive cities with attractive people and manicured dogs and lots of Peugeots and Renaults. The hotel, widely touted as on...

Roses en Lyon

So after Paris, I decided to go to Nice but ended up in Lyon instead. When I got to the train station there weren't any tickets left for Nice, so I figured I might as well go to Lyon first. It was good because the train ride was shorter, too. When I first got to Lyon, I honestly wasn't that impressed. It's not picturesque in the same way that (parts of) Paris and Saint-Malo are, even though there are two rivers running through it - rivers generally upping my cit...

Lunch in Lyon
posted by:
Feb 02, 2008 - Feb 08, 2008
After a couple of hours driving through the alps, we emerged in Lyon. Driving by the Rhone it already seemed like a beautiful city with nice colors. We were given a couple hours for lunch & exploring on our own. I wasn't yet hungry so I walked with Phil, Harris, and Aaron down one of the center streets of the city. At the end we found a large Ferris Wheel. It was looked so nice and Phil and I wanted to go on it, but Harris and Aaron, I don't know why but they didn't want to go. So we ran ...

Lyon - Base camp

Alright, so the outcome of this game was never going to be a shocker :-) The lead up to the game was wonderful with the enthusiasm of the Portuguese fans enciting the usually tempered Kiwis to be a little more boisterous themselves.  Again, outside the Stade Gerland, the burgers were grilling, the flags waving, the band playing, the fans dancing, the unsuspecting foreigners getting tanked on fake beer...Why Heineken decided that this would be a good event to officially sponsor is beyond...

The infamous night at the Chateau-de-Cruix
posted by:
May 23, 2006 - Jul 09, 2007
Woke up and got a few strange looks this morning... apparently quite a few people had heard about the previous night's "incident" and were curious.  Whatever, I thought it was funny more than anything. Breakfast wasn't anything too exciting, cereal, baguettes, potato-ham-cheese bake.  Took a shower and then got ready for the trek up to "the Top of the World."  There's a huge hill about an hour from the chateau, so all the groups who stay there end up taking a day to just climb...

I have totally sinned!  I lied to a man of god in his own house.  But it was his own fault.  hahaha.  I was at this big church here (which looks exactly like a dead elephant) and the priest started talking to me in Chinese, and I was like, oh I'm not Chinese.  He went through four guesses before I said, oh, I'm Filipino.  And then he was really embarassed and I felt a little bad, but not really because you know it really irks me when people ma...

In Lyon, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated each year with a festival of lights. There are lighting displays of all different types throughout the city. The Hotel de Ville is open for the spectacle and was my favorite display as it was the most colorful.  The other displays were amazing as well…we saw buildings being “built” and “on fire”, as well as whimsical creatures floating through the air...there was even a ballet (with people suspended by ropes) ...
