Lviv Overview

If you ask a specialist in geography, he’ll say that Lviv is a city in Ukraine. Lviv is one of Ukraine’s regional cities, situated on the hills of picturesque Roztochia, where the main European watershed, dividing the rivers of the Baltic and Black Seas basins, passes. Lviv stands at the crossroads that connects Western and Eastern Europe overland. The city represents the western facet of Ukraine. And you really feel the difference when you get here, for example after Odessa or Yalta.

Ask a historian, and he will take a lot of your time telling the story of the city. In the middle of the 13th century, on the hills alongside the Poltva river, at the site of an ancient settlement, Danylo, the King of Halychyna and Volyn, founded a castle-town and named it in honor of his son, Lev.

Ask anybody who has visited Lviv and they will tell you about the hospitality of people, the wealth of exquisite art and culture, the colourful folk traditions and the cosmopolitan mixture of many nations. But the city of Lviv speaks for itself better than any visitor can. This is a city with a long and proud history, where dreams are said to come true and where every street has a legend. Those who have visited Lviv return to it again and again, as if drawn by its magic attraction. Come and experience it for yourself!

Lviv is home to Svitoch, Ukrainian confectionery manufacturer, owned by Nestle now. Back when Ukraine was a part of the USSR, Svitoch was considered one of the best chocolate manufacturers in the world.

When in Lviv, be sure to visit its famous cemetery called Lychakiv Cemetery. You'll see an impressive collection of gravestone monuments many of which are true masterpieces!
