Luxor Hotel Las Vegas

I had wanted to stay at the Luxor almost since it was built. The thought of staying in a non-traditionally shaped hotel was intriquing. My wife surprised me with a Las Vegas trip for our 21st Anniversary, and we stayed at the Luxor.

Check in went smooth. We had to wait in line for less than two minutes, and then the whole transaction took about that time as well. We arrived after standard check in time (4:30 PM), during mid-week. That was likely a factor.

Our room, on the 9th floor, offered a view of Mandalay Bay. The room was clean, and showed just some tiny evidence of wear. We liked the Egyptian theme, and of course the slanted wall that comes with the pyramid. I thought the bed a little uncomfortable, but it wasn't like I had trouble sleeping. The shower (no tub) had fair water pressure.

The Luxor has several restaurants and a buffet. I had tried, and really liked, the buffet on a previous visit. But we did not spend a lot of time actually in our hotel on this trip, and we did not eat here.

There are plenty of diversions to keep you busy, with a museum honoring King Tut and numerous shops. You are also connected to Mandalay Bay via a walkway and tram, so that hotel can be explored relatively easy.

The one bad part about the Luxor is the location. While it is on the strip, it is on the far south end. Getting to anything else requires a bit of walking, a car, a taxi, ot monorail. But, it is easy to cross Las Vegas Blvd at the Luxor, as an overhead walkway connects it to the Excaliber, and from there you can walk across another walkway to the MGM Grand, to catch the monorail. Be forewarned, he distance is deceiving to walk to the MGM monorail. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get from the Luxor lobby to the monorail.

We would likely not stay at the Luxor again. It was OK and a nice experience, but it is more a place to visit, than to stay. There are better deals if you don't want to be in the thick of things on the strip. And there are places in the same price range closer to mid-strip

One of my favorite Vegas hotels.
Its unique and just fun to walk around in, plus they're been renovating it lately and its got a ton of new restaurants and other trendy spots.
The regular rooms are nice but if you don't mind spending a little more, do the upgrade to the tower. Comfy beds, bathtub, etc.
Although it is not in center of the strip its still nicely located, you can get to Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, NYNY, Tropicana and MGM without ever setting foot on the sidewalk, there are walkways all over.

We got a good deal online (again) and decided to go with it since we would rather spend our money gambling! The Luxor was really not as bad as I have seen some reviews make it out to be. Just ask to stay on a higher floor and that should take care of the casino noise...the beds are really uncomfortable, though. I wish that they had some good shopping inside but Mandalay is not too far away! As for downtown, you can take the "Deuce"(a double decker bus) but be prepared to ride for awhile...cheap, though. Food is pricey pretty much everywhere you go.

Cons:
Check-in was a bit slow, but I don't blame the hotel. We arrived on a weekday several hours before standard check-in time and lines were fairly long, but a cocktail waitress came by regularly to offer complimentary bottled water to us as we waited. Check-in for me personally took maybe 90 seconds so I think the reason for the delay was other guests simple were not prepared.

Fusia, the Asian cuisine restaurant at the Luxor was a bit pricey for my tastes. My meal ran me about $60 for one (low-priced appetizer, second cheapest main course on the menu, fruit for desert, and a bottle of water - although the water is straight from the is). The service was fantastic - I had at least six different overdressed employees pour water from my bottle into my glass. That was kind of a first for me.

The food court is pricey as well, but I'm sure that's just the nature of the best in Las Vegas. When we first arrived it was our first time in Vegas and we thought we'd try to be thrifty by eating fast food for a first meal, but it was $25-30 for hot dogs, fries, and a soft drink for two.

Location is so-so. Luxor is on the south end of the strip, so a good hike to most other places and a $20 cab ride to downtown. It is however connected to both Mandalay Bay and the Excalibur through indoor walkways.

The museum and knick-knack shop seemed like a cheesy tourist trap, and I'm sure that's exactly what it's supposed to be.

Navigation was tricky at first - it's a rather large place, but it's pretty much a square (not a maze) so pick a few landmarks and navigation is simple.

Pros:
The room was nice for the price. Nothing fancy - two beds, table with two chairs, 24 inch tv with average channel selection and ppv, I believe there were two separate alarm clocks, chest of about 6 decent sized drwaers, and the bathroom wasn't cramped - decent sized shower, no tub. I was told to aim for a tower room as they're newer and remodeled, but being in the pyramid was kind of neat. The elevator (incline) going up to the room is actually on a slant, the window in the room is very slanted as it makes up part of the pyramid you see from outside, and the pyramid is really just that..a hollowed out pyramid, and the room sall go around the outside, so in the hallways outside the rooms you're overlooking the giant open center area, so those with a fear of height may want to steer clear of pyramid rooms on the upper floors.

The table staff were all very friendly - quiet, but friendly. They willingly taught us how to play the games were not familar with during slow times. The staff at the sports book was a couple of older gentlemen that made the experience much more enjoyable by practically walking us through step by step how the sports and racing book function.

The buffet was good. Average priced, slightly above average food. It wasn't the best we had but it was a solid choice for anyone staying there and didn't want to venture out. The cafe (I forget the name - the 24 hour joint, not the deli) was also decent food for fair prices and made a great late night snack.

Checkout was a breeze. You're required to have a credit card on file so you can opt to just deposit your room keycards in one of several drop boxes throughout the ground floor rather than go through a formal checkout process.

Overall I was very satisfied with the Luxor. My next visit I would likely stay elsewhere, but only for the sake of experimenting. The Luxor is not a $250/night establishment with midgets running around to massage your calves at your beck and call, but it seemed above and for what I payed I can't stay at a local budget Days Inn. It's a large enough hotel that you could spend a week here without leaving, but not so overpowering or overpriced that you feel obliged to. As far as bang-for-your-buck, it seems like the Luxor would be hard to top.

At first arriving to the Luxor, it was very impressive. Seeing the pyramid while driving from the airport, the massive hotel lobby, the inclinator elevator, and the view from our hotel room (facing Mandalay Bay). However, once looking around the room most of the furniture was damaged and the bathroom door was damaged as well. Also, that was the first time ever that I've been in a hotel without any complimentary coffee in the hotel room!

We had two rooms next to each other. The room I was in the toilet flushed but the sink would take a while to clear. The other room the toilet wouldn't flush and the sink would back up. We had to call maintenance every single day of the trip. Also, they tried to say that the toilets on the west coast are different from the east coast (I've been to vegas before and never had a problem. Also I've been to LA and never had a problem. plus the toilet in one room was fine.) Anyway, we did get two days money back after the trip.

Also, the fire alarms went off a couple times during one of the nights we were there!

As a general rule of Las Vegas hotels, if you can see it from the plane before you land, it tends to be a good one. As you may have guessed, the Luxor is no exception.

On my last trip to Vegas, my boyfriend and I stayed at the Luxor in one of their spa suites, meaning that our room had a hot tub in it (!). Not half bad, especially if you can find one of the myriad deals being offered online by placed like Orbitz and Expedia. As with all the hotels, the rooms range in fanciness depending on what you want to pay and which side of the strip you're overlooking. Ours happened to have a nice view (and have I mentioned there was a hot tub in the room?).

But of course, you don't go to Vegas to stay in your room. Or maybe you do, depending on what sort of illicit activity brought you there in the first place. But if you're the adventurous type, you'll want to take the inclinator (no escalators here) down to the casino level and peruse the faux artifacts strewn about the floor. They're pretty impressive - the photos don't do them justice - and you could fill a day just looking at the themed decor of every hotel on the strip. The Luxor is one of the better ones, I must say, although I don't know if there's a dull square inch anywhere in Vegas.

So if you're looking for the Vegas experience - a name-brand hotel/casino with an enthusiastic theme, in-house gambling, nightclubs, and shows, and a variety of cutesy rooms to choose from, the Luxor is a safe bet. Yes, it really is Disneyland for adults.

Rates in general are not that expensive in Las Vegas as I believe money comes from gambling in the Casino. This hotel is one of the nicest in Las Vegas. I arrived to Las Vegas at night, so we saw that amazing laser coming out from the pyramid. The lobby is just amazing, so huge! they have tons of recepcionists doing check-ins and outs. It is quite overwhelming and there is a lot of activity. What surprises you is how you get in the hotel and you cannot make a difference between day and night. They maintain the same lightening so you lose track of the time and you keep gambling. If you can, reserve a room as high as posible, as the views are better and also the shape of the room varies a lot. I attached a couple of pictures so you can get a sense of how it is. Don´t even know how many rooms they have, but is is impressive!
