My wife & I recently ducked out for our first visit to Texas Hill Country and I mandated that we stop at Luckenbach, Texas, immortalized in song as the place where “ain’t nobody feeling any pain.” I am glad to be able to validate that statement and it was a fun excursion. We were holed up in nearby Fredericksburg, a pleasant, unremarkable tourist town five or so miles away, and managed to visit a couple wineries en route. We arrived without difficulty and discovered a handful of dilapidated buildings and many bikers! The signs are correct…keep driving and you will arrive at plentiful parking. The stated population of Luckenbach is three, and sure enough there are only three houses there (told my wife that perhaps everyone was single and that’s why “no pain”..earning a slap, lol). These few abodes are accompanied by several weathered board buildings which represent a dance hall, a restaurant and a combination post office/bar/general store/souvenir shop. No hotels, so this is a day trip or elect a designated driver if you plan to catch one of the evening performances at the dance hall --- appear to have shows most every night excepting Monday, although I didn’t recognize a single band on the play list (a surprise since we came directly from the Torre di Pietra winery where Toni Price had performed for free the day before!). No open container law, which suited the several dozen bikers milling about perfectly, and a very congenial atmosphere. Since it was late afternoon and well before show time, however, there wasn’t much to do so we picked up a tacky magnet + the requisite “Everybody’s Somebody in Luckenbach” t-shirt and rebounded to Fredericksburg. Between possession of this t-shirt and having seen Willie Nelson in concert I might be considered a genuine Texan….whadda y’all think???
