Piazza Anfiteatro. Feb 09, 2018
This square was built on the foundations of a Roman amphitheater built in the second half of the first century A. D. Later it was used as a quarry to supply the town with materials for churches and palaces. Several buildings were constructed inside this oval area in the Middle Ages. In the 19th century all these buildings were removed and the square was created.

Today in this square there several restaurants and shops. It is also a venue for various events as well.

Piazza dell'Anfiteatro Jan 28, 2017
Piazza dell'Anfiteatro (the Amphitheater Square) is a trademark of the city of Lucca. The square has a unique shape of an elongated ellipse, thanks to the fact that was built on the ruins of a Roman amphitheater from the 2nd century DC. At the time when it was built in the Middle Ages, the square was called "parlascio", and it was the place where gather the local population when it came to discuss a problem. Gradually the square was being closed by construction of buildings that served as salt deposit, powder magazine and prison.

In the 19th century local architect Lorenzo Nottolini changed the old structure of the square and urbanized it at the present look. He emptied the central area of the square and all around it was built todays Via dell'Anfiteatro (the Amphitheater street). Initially the square served as the city food market but later it was moved to another location.

Careful visitors can observe the remains of a Roman amphitheater on the outer facades of buildings surrounding the square.
