Amazing Jan 12, 2012
This is one of the most amazing atmospheric places in the world. The morning begging rounds of the student monks, the mny temples and the MEkong river passing next to this Unesco Heritage city.

I also loved the massage parlors, french cuisine, night market and the small towns (Whisky Village) alongside the Mekong. Rent a boat and visit the town across Luang : it has an old temple, off the beaten track.

I'd recommend going out of season as I can imagine it's not like years ago. Many tourists there I would say from december on, but still not like places like Hanoi or Chiang Mai.

Oasis in a rugged, forested mountain landscape Dec 17, 2011
This city is found on a peninsula near the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers. It is about 450 kilometers north of the capital Vientianne. I believe it is the second largest city in the country but still likely has fewer than 100,000 people. But this town has a lot to offer, nestled in a large river valley surrounded by sparsely populated mountain ranges.

Many tourists arrive to this town via "the slow boat" which is a two day boat ride from northern Laos. Luang Prabang can host quiet couple and, as you would quickly notice, many young party folk. The town is a stop over before many go down to the river tubing empire of Vang Vieng. But with the noise of those folks aside, one can settle down nicely in Luang Prabang for a few days. There are galleries, street shops galore, many temples, elephant rides and jungle adventure trips around. When looking around for a place to stay, it is easy to find clean spacious rooms for $15 USD a night. A recommended stop among many in the safe and more than affordable town of Luang Prabang.
