Spectacular Falls Jun 17, 2002
Lower Proxy Falls is absolutely dazzling, especially in the spring time. Although we had seen many pictures before going and knowing it was a big one, 200 ft. high, we had never seen a very decent picture of the entire waterfall, and so we were surprised and over-joyed when we came to the wonderful viewpoint of the waterfall, which is up across the very narrow canyon from the falls so you are still quite close. Although we didn’t take the trail down to the creek, a trail leads down and you can scramble across Proxy Creek to where you can actually walk right to the base of the falls. We didn’t see anyone do it while we were there. Proxy Falls Trail begins at the marked trailhead along Hwy #242. It is a loop trail, and they want you to follow it in a counter-clockwise direction (don't ask me why) going first to Lower Proxy Falls, then to Upper Proxy Falls. This is a surprisingly popular trail, across several lava beds, so we recommend coming on a weekday in the morning to avoid crowds.
