I would rate this site a five star if you were able to walk around an on it. However, it is currently on private land, easily visible from the road. Lower Jackson Mound is a latitude 32.63 longitude - 91.41. From Interstate 20 go north on Route 17 to Epps, turn right (east) on Route 134. Go 4.5 miles and turn right on Walnut Grove Lane, the state historic mound marker is on your right. This is the best documented Middle Archaic (>3500 BC) mound on the Northeast Louisiana Mound Trail. This site is composed of a single 8 feet high, conical shaped mound, about 130 feet in diameter. Until 1990 this mound considered a part of Poverty Point Mound system about 2 miles to the north. Some archaeologist think that the builders of the Poverty Point Mound system may have incorporated Jackson Mound into its astrological sighting plan. Lower Jackson Mound has had a continuous core sample taken, documenting that this mound was raised in a single construction phase. Lower Jackson Mound, Louisiana Charcoal samples taken from beneath Lower Jackson Mound have been dated to 3955 BC to 3655 BC. Much older than Poverty Point. Portions of this mound were removed in both the 1870s and 1980s to be used as road fill. Approximately 70% of the original mound remains. The entire mount probable would have been lost if not for the historic cemetery atop this mound. There was a trend to place modern cemetery atop pre-historic Native American mounds. Lower Jackson Mound is on private property and sits approximately one mile south of Grove Lane. As you face Lower Jackson Mount, on your left is a grass field road that eventually swings to the right and passes directly in front of this mound. There are a number of residences on Grove Lane, it may be possible to obtain permission to visit this site.
