An American Castle Feb 05, 2011
There aren't many opportunities to visit a castle in the United States for obvious reasons. But you can go to one in Loveland, Ohio, just outside of Cincinnati. No, not a mansion, residence, or other structure that is merely called a castle, and not a quick modern architecture type of structure that might have been built for a renaissance festival. This is an honest-to-goodness European-style castle, called the Loveland Castle, or sometimes Chateau Laroche. It was built by Harry Andrews following his time in the army during World War I and his love for castles, and he built the castle himself and by hand, over the course of the rest of his life.

This castle comes complete with throne room, dungeon, living chambers, banquet area, towers and more. It's not a particularly big castle, and it obviously has no historical value as no royalty ever lived there, it never came under seige, and the like, but still, it gives an idea of what it may have been like to live in a castle. And there are suits of armor and other "castle" memorabilia on display here that have come from Europe and around the world.

There are also beautiful gardens on the grounds of this castle that you can walk around after paying your admission, and have a picnic lunch there if you'd like. The castle does host other events over the year, such as jousting and a haunted castle in the fall.
