Louisiana Country Music Museum Marthaville Reviews
Country Music Museum and park. May 01, 2013
The full name of the site is Rebel State Historic Site & Louisiana Country Music Museum, but because it is so long I had to shorten it for this review.
The site is located three miles northwest of Marthaville on LA 1221, near Many. It is 10 miles from Robeline and 25 miles west of the historic town of Natchitoches and I-49. Coordinates: 31.746877,-93.428383.
They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm; closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Guided tours are offered daily.
Entry Fees is $4 per person; free for seniors (62 and over) and for children age 12 and under.
Rebel State Historic Site was born out of a local legend dating back the Civil War. Here a young Confederate soldier became separated from his unit and stopped for a drink of water from a nearby spring. He was spotted and killed by Union cavalry. The Barnhill family, local residents discovered the body and buried him beside the road. In 1962, the area residents placed a marker and began an annual memorial service in honor of the Unknown Confederate Soldier. The local people’s love of country and gospel music helped create an attractive outdoor gathering place and draw musical programs all year long.
The Louisiana Country Music Museum contains many exhibits that tell the story of how various the music traditions developed in this part of the country. Gospel and string band music to the country sounds we enjoy today are all featured. The museum also honors the contributions of the many Louisiana natives who have become prominent in the country music and gospel music industries. The museum contains costumes, instruments and pictures that have been donated by the above mentioned performers, including Roy Acuff's fiddle and yo-yo, as well as one of Hank Williams Jr.'s shirts.
We enjoyed the museum so much and felt it was well managed and displayed. Would recommend to all to go a little out of their way to find and enjoy it yourself.
