A Good Example of How Not to Do It May 03, 2008
This place is a great example of what happens when you are the only cafe in town, and why competition is a good thing. In a prime location just up the street from the station, it is the only cafe in evidence on the highstreet. If you are waiting for a train, then it would be tempting. Get a sansdwich in the supermarket instead.
Oh, Sarahelaine, I hear you say, it can't be that bad. Well.
Service is conditional on the current state of the waitresses' love lives. Once they have finished talking about that, you may be seated. The coffee, when it arrives, is nice - it should be, because it's Costa. But don't expect it fast. The food is perfectly acceptable. But we waited 25 minutes for "tapas," by which they meant "all the stuff we have lying around in the kitchen that needs using up." There is nothing wrong with tuna mayonnaise, but a big lump of it on a chopping board is not now, nor is it likely to become, tapas. The bread took another 7 minutes to come out, was slightly stale, and for the two of us and our pile of coleslaw and tuna mayo, was a miserly quantity. Two coffees and this pile of assorted sandwich fillings came to £25 between us.
The atmosphere is mediocre, and service is surprised to see you and bordering on sullen, with the exception of the poor lass who couldn't get the card machine to work. She's lovely, and I am sure, deserves a better job somewhere nicer.
On the plus side, the coffee was nice and the food was OK, if more suited for salad than tapas.
