The Second City of Angels
posted by:

We arrived in Los Angeles as stayed with friends in Northridge. They were most hospitable … actually it was my first opportunity to experience genuine American hospitality as I’ve always stayed in paid accommodation like hotels or guesthouses. Funny ... I was in the other City of Angels (Bangkok, properly known as Krungthep Mahanakorn which means City of Angels) only a week ago!

Epilogue--nothing ever goes as planned. . . 4 months later, in El Lay
posted by:

Rome, Italy -› Athens, Greece -› ...
There’s a small awards ceremony every January in El Lay, where the best photos of the year are honored. I am always required to attend--at least they pay for the rented tux--but I always manage to sneak out after a while, and usually end up going somewhere else for the rest of the night. . . in the tuxedo. Like the time I went to a UCLA women’s basketball game, scarfing popcorn and getting butter. . . on the tuxedo, you guessed it. So, this year I actually get nominated for that Taj Mahal…

Well I think America in general has more of the man made attractions rather than the natural ones. I went to Universal Studios while in LA, California. It had some cool rides and some cool shows. From that you can see that movies are COMPLETELY fake. What you see on the screen is not really happening at all. They showed us a flood and rain, trains crashing and bombs exploding. There was one ride where it was all dark in front of you and so you're staring into the darkness to find whats…

Ready Set Go!

I always seem to leave the packing to the very last night before a big trip. My destination: China. I set my expectations low as I did not know what to expect at all. I know very little of the country and even less of the language. My parentals had this vacation planned for far too long and now was the perfect opportunity for the whole family to go. I quickly loaded up the last few songs in my ipod, double checked my luggages and headed from sunny san diego to los angeles to meet up with my p…

We said "Ta-ta" to Tatarstan as we flew to Los Angeles via Samara, Frankfurt and London.  In London we met up with Eric and Catherine whom we are taking home on Kim's Air New Zealand "staff" tickets.  This seems to be the end of another great adventure.  It is good to be reminded how well-off we are ... in terms of an unpolluted environment.  Also good to be reminded how ripped-off we are ... how can anyone justify $80 for a top-label shirt made in China where labou…

I had an epiphany: Singapore is exactly on the other side of the world from Orlando. When I fly from Los Angeles to Singapore, I will fly so far west that I will cross the international date line and be in tomorrow. An instant message conversation might go like this:FireAtWill: Hey man, what’s up?VirtualRyan: I can’t tell you about the future. It could destroy the space-time continuum. What are you up to?FireAtWill: IDK. Might go to Mulligan’s Pub to get a beer yesterday. There are two p…

My sister was DONE (overdone) with living in El Paso, Texas! She invited me to fly down from Portland, pack up the Ford Focus with some light boxes, the two of us, two kids, and "Bunny" the hampster. We left El Paso, and set out across the southern deserts of New Mexico, Arizona, and California on I-10. Then, headed north on I-5 through California's Central Valley, the southern Oregon Siskiyous, and the Willamette Valley to Portland. (Tracie and the kids continued on to settle in Seattle.)
