Local Mexican Fare Oct 02, 2008
To most Americans that live anywhere besides the Mexican border states, we have a certain view of Mexican food is and should be. Often this is based on trips to the local Taco Bell or On the Border chain restaurants. Perhaps you go to a more personal, independantly operated Mexican restaurant, such as my personal favorite, Viva Zapata's in Westport, CT. Not that this isn't real Mexican food, but this is typically "border" food, which is the most common. Southern Mexican food is quite different and also quite good. Such dishes as venison tostadas, mole, goat leg fajitas, ant eggs, etc are these delicacies that you will not find in Chiles!! Los Almendros is a great place to go to sample such food. Their specialy is actually the Yucatan Peninsula. My experience was top notch starting right off the bat with the arrival of the Tequila cart all the way through the desert cart. Try the Flan!!
