There used to be several ways of traveling in Europe on the cheap when I first started travelling by ttrain with a Eurail Pass, hitchhiking and so on... I eventually realized with the price increases on the Eurail Pass that when travelling in pairs or more, a car was the way to go... You get destination flexibility as well as departure time choices and so on... Not to mention luggage safety.
