Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel
Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel Singapore Reviews
Long's Bar Feb 22, 2012
The Long Bar of the Raffles is a Singapore institution. It is a bit of a strange experience, as it is a very high end bar with extremely attentive staff, but tradition dictates that you eat a lot of peanuts and throw the shells straight on the floor. Tradition can be a funny thing. Apart from that, its main claim to fame is as the home of the Singapore Sling, a gin based cocktail that is all too easy to drink in the heat.
The bar is decorated to reflect its history as one of the oldest and most famous bars in the world. The Singapore Sling was invented here in 1915, and although Wikipedia tells me that the bar itself was moved during redevelopment in the 1990s so it isn’t exactly the same place there is still a real sense of history here.
There is a dress code, but it is not especially strict – expect to get turned away if you are wearing shorts (especially if you are a man) or scruffy sandals. I am fairly sure we saw plenty of people allowed in wearing the smarter kind of trainer/casual shoes, though. Drinks are expensive, even by Singapore standards, and this is probably a good place to go to get one drink at the beginning of the night and then move on. That said, it is fun to drink in the same bar as authors like Hemingway and enjoy a glimpse into old Singapore.
