Lokrum Island Dubrovnik Reviews
Cliff diving, sunbathing, hiking and a curse! Jun 14, 2012
Lokrum is a great locale for a day trip from Dubrovnik. Lying a short 15 minute ferry ride away from the old town port, Lokrum offers a variety of activities.
If you want to sunbathe, head south and you will find a large rocky outcropping. The stone is flat and you can find plenty of space to spread out, but bring a thick blanket because it's a very hard rock and the surface is very scratchy. If you're feeling adventurous, the same area also has some great spots to cliff dive into the beautiful clear blue waters.
If you feel up for a hike, there is an abandoned fort/gun emplacement at the top of a hill, to the northeast. You can climb up on top of the fort and there are great views of the surrounding water, as well as the Dubrovnik city walls.
The sun can be brutal on the rocky beach area and at these times, you may want to retreat inland. Luckily, there is a smaller swimming hole surrounded by trees. Experienced swimmers can swim into spot through a hold in the rock face. The less experienced can just walk down along the path. :)
Lokrum is also the home of botanical gardens and a former Benedictine monastery. A restaurant is based in the monastery buildings and you'll find public washrooms there. The botanical gardens features over 500 varieties of plant life as well as multiple families of peacocks. If you visit in May-June, there is a good chance you will see little chicks running around. Be careful, while the peacocks are pretty tame, make sure to not get between the chicks and their parents.
There is a legend saying the island is cursed. The legend began in 14th century when a French general order the Benedictines to be expelled from the monastery. The monks allegedly cursed the island against people who would use it for their personal pleasure. Since it's now a public park and is open for everyone's enjoyment, I'm sure we're all safe from the curse. :)
