A lovely oasis in Funchal Apr 23, 2010
Funchal is full of tourists, of course. Many restaurants are pure tourist haunts. Others are mixed, and many of the snack bars are really used mainly by locals.

Loja do Cha is perhaps unique in its atmosphere. The clients are largely tourists (though some locals use it, too), and staff speak English and German fluently. However, it never really feels like a crass tourist place. Instead, it feels genuine. Staff are extremely friendly, and never trying to up-sell or solicit customers. For many of the Germans who go there, asking for coffee, they politely point out that no coffee is sold on the premises.

This is a tea house. The have a wide variety of teas - literally, many dozens. Several different Black Teas, Darjeelings, Ear Greys, Green Teas, Rooibos teas, and various fruit infusions. They do iced teas, flavoured teas, and other things that traditionalists might balk at, but for those, they have tea rarities (including the "champagne of teas") - in short, if you have any interest in tea, you will find something to love here.

With regards to the food they serve, it is excellent, generally light, in many cases vegetarian, and absolutely lovely. Whether their Roesti salad, the tropical salad with ham and cheese, the vegetarian burger, or the various cakes and scones and bread rolls... all is mouthwatering, and all is excellent.

An absolute gem in the middle of Funchal - it might not have a sea view, but it makes up in atmosphere and delight for its unspectacular location.
