 Hostelling Heaven is in New Zealand Aug 26, 2008
A decade of hostelling on all continents (OK, except Antarctica, but last time I checked they didn't have any hostels there) has led me to call for a winner. In my opinion this is the best hostel in the world.
Let me tell you why: 1.) Location, location, location! On the tranquil shores of the Queen Charlotte Sound in the stunning Marlborough Sounds of New Zealand. And now the best part: there are no roads to Lochmara Lodge but it is accessible by sea from Picton in their fast water taxi, or you can walk in via the Queen Charlotte Track. 2.) Hot spa. Luxury while hostelling. 3.) Hammocks in the forest. You can see glowworms in the dark. 4.) Free use of kayaks, rowboat and snorkelling gear in the fjord. 5.) No TV. Really, more hostels should do this. It really encourages travellers to talk to each other, or just read. 6.) Great customer service that made you feel at home straight away. Unfortunately I could only spend one night here, but it was truly unforgettable.
