Loch Maddy Vacation Guide

Lochmaddy (or Loch nam Madadh in Scottish Gaelic, "Lake of the fox") is the small but important admin capital of North Uist in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The rocky town is located at the end of an inlet and is really the only settlement on the east coast of N.Uist.
According to wikipedia,"Virtually the first mention anywhere of Lochmaddy is a complaint of "piracie and murder" in a report dated 1616: "Lochmaldie on the coast of Uist is a rendezvous for pirates" it said. The coves and inlets characterising the area around the village were ideal hiding places for raiding ships stocked with fine goods bound for the clan chiefs of the time, and contraband activity persisted until the modern era."
The modern harbour of Lochmaddy is the ferry port for the island, allowing the MV Hebrides to traverse to the Isle of Skye. Commercial activity in the area is in large part due to the port. The village is home to the only youth hostel, tourist center, and bank on North Uist. As of 2001 their is no hospital in Lochmaddy. The nearest one is Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh (Uist and Barra Hospital) in nearby Balivanich, Benbecula.
