Sparse but compelling ruins by the Loch Sep 17, 2007
Loch Assynt is surrounded by picturesque peaks, mostly of Torridonian Sandstone, some of them the subject of separate reviews on this site.

I had often driven past the loch, while travelling between Ullapool and Lochinver but in 2007 we stopped to look at the ruins of Ardvreck Castle. Nobody would pretend that this is among the spectacular castles or their remains in Scotland. In fact there is very little to see when you get near but the situation of the castle on a sort of 'almost-island' is very imposing.

The castle existed form the 15th to the eighteenth century, when much of its stone was used to buid the second ruin of Loch Assynt, Calda House. This burned down in under 20 years.
