Ljubljana is a bit unknown, and that's a shame. It's the beautiful small capitol of Slovenia which you really shouldn't miss. Getting around is very easy because of the size and the fact that everyone speaks English, which you don't see that often in southern Europe. Als, the city is a great base to explore the country, or even go to Zagreb in Croatia. Almost the complete country can be reach in max 2 hours from Ljubljana, even faster of you rent a car. Tips for lunch/dinner in Ljubljana: Stari Tisler and Sokol.

The Old Town is the best part of the city, especially strolling around the Ljubljanica river getting some food and drinks, and ofcourse the Tivoli Park. Outside Ljubljana you should visit the Skocjan Caves (trainstation Divaca, from there a 40 minute walk). Zagreb is only two hours away by train, Maribor about the same (only fun in winter and summer). Celje is also really worth getting out.

Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj are probably some of the most beautiful mountain lakes you've ever seen. But in my opinion the best place was the Vrata Valley in the north of Triglav national park, especially when the first snow has just fallen and there's really nobody else up there. Next time I'm there I will certainly take the hike up to the north face of the Triglav. Best way to get there is to rent a car and head in the direction of Austria. The last exit before Austria you should leave the highway end head in the direction of Kransjka Gora. Enter the village of Mojstrana and from there enter the national park. Follow the signs to Slap Pericnik (Pericnik fall) and follow the road till it ends, from there some hiking routs start.

I've been twice, and will definitely go back.
