- Directions: From Oklahoma City, drive northwest on State Highway 3 for 100 miles to Seiling. Then take US Highway 281 North about 30 miles to Waynoka. The park will be on your left just before hitting town.

The sand dunes here are so real the major motion picture "Flight of the Phoenix" was planned to be filmed here, until financial matters scuttled that plan. Even without the movie, Little Sahara State Park in northwest Oklahoma is an amazing sight to behold.
Smack dab in the southern Plains, Little Sahara is named after the big Sahara in Africa. This park holds over 1,600 acres of sand and sand dunes. If you get into the center of the park, you'd think you really were in the Sahara (especially in the summer, when temps go over 100 degrees F). About two hours northwest of Oklahoma City, getting to Little Sahara isn't hard at all. And once there, the park rates are pretty fair. A trail pass is $7, while a tent site is $8 and an RV spot is $16. If you're interested in the ATV trails, you'll have to bring your own machine, as they don't do rentals. But this park is worth just going to and walking around. You'll get that north Africa feel without having to be in a dangerous country or be surrounded by true isolation.
