Little Egypt Festival Salem Reviews
Great day for a Parade Apr 21, 2010
The Little Egypt Festival is held every first Saturday in October, no matter the weather. This being said, there have been times that it has been so cold we've had to dress in layers; other times, shorts and t-shirts are appropriate.
The Little Egypt Festival opens mid-morning with vendors set up around the courthouse downtown. Vendors selling crafts, antiques, and food are around. At the park north of town, a car show does on throughout the morning.
Prime seats are claimed early AM along the parade route. Empty chairs and blankets line the route until just before the parade begins. (And these claims are honored).
The culmination of the Little Egypt Festival is the parade that begins at the park. Many floats, marching bands, dance/tumbling troupes and politicians abound in the parade line-up. The parade marches down Broadway to Main Street, where it turns west and ends at Illinois Street, making a 3-mile route (give or take). The last entry of the parade: the street-sweeper. (It follows the horses, and yes, it's an official entry.)
