Litchfield Plantation Retreat Pawleys Island Reviews
Litchfield Plantation Jul 17, 2008
My wife and I were looking for a quiet getaway before the over-scheduled Christmas holidays and found it at Litchfield Plantation in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Located on 600 acres nestled between the ocean and the Waccamaw River, this peaceful spot has a multitude of options from quiet beach walks and outdoor adventures to busy nightspots featuring some of the best seafood on the east coast.
Upon arrival your expectations are enhanced by an approach through columns of live oaks dripping with Spanish moss. We checked in at the Guest Center and a helpful attendant patiently explained available entertainment and sightseeing options, even highlighting three different maps to make sure we found our way.
Upon entering our suite, we were transported back to a time when southern hospitality was unrivaled in graciousness. Period furnishings, a working fireplace and antique accessories combined with modern touches such as wireless Internet and a two person whirlpool tub combined old world charm with modern convenience. Unfortunately the pairing didn’t quite gel - Kim and I shared the feeling that while our grandparents would have adored the staid luxury, it wasn’t our cup of tea (not a slam, we just aren’t elegant folks, lol).
Litchfield Plantation is an ideal location to base yourself for exploring the local shorefront communities of Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet and Georgetown. (If you’re in the mood for a busier venue, a short drive will get you to Myrtle Beach to the north and Charleston to the south.) Although we were there after swimming season, staying at Litchfield provides you with access to their splendid beach house on Pawley’s Island. A three story structure right on the sand, the beach house has showers, changing rooms, beach chairs, umbrellas and most important, a place to park!
A final attribute of Litchfield worth mentioning is their classy dinner spot, the Carriage House Club. This was where we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast in the morning (WAY above your typical guest breakfast…I had Eggs Benedict!), but at night it gets transformed into a romantic cafe by candlelight and a crackling fire. The menu selections made our mouths water and we were not disappointed by the savory taste or the excellent service, which combined to elevate this from an ordinary meal to a real experience. From escargot to she-crab soup to an elegant shrimp and grits presentation, we enjoyed every bite.
With so much left to see, we’re already planning our return to Pawleys Island. Although we found plenty to do in the cooler fall season, a summer visit to the Litchfield Plantation would bring even more options, including relaxing in the heated pool, playing a round of golf or serving things up on the tennis courts. Truly a southern legacy that you need to experience for yourself!
