Lion Monument - Lucerne Reviews

Nov 14, 2007
It was carved out of natural rock in memory of the heroic deaths of the Swiss mercenaries at the Tuileries (France) in 1792. Mark Twain described the Lion of Lucerne as the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world.

This is a must-view monument in the city of lucerne.. just a few steps away of the lake.

«The dying Lion of Lucerne» is...
Lucerne is history..

This is a memorial to Swiss Guards who gave their lives during the French Revolution in 1792. Bertel Thorvaldsen, a Danish artist, depicted a dying lion. It was carved into the sandstone cliff above the city center. Dedicated in 1821 it has attracted millions of visitors over the years. The latin inscription HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI means "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss". The names of each guard killed (760) and saved (350) are also engraved at the site. The look of sadness and pain is very evident on the face of the lion.
