Linz Vacation Guide
Linz is the capital of the Bundesland Oberoesterreich/Upper Austria, and Austrias third-largest city.
Due to its location at the Danube Linz is an industrial city. The Voestalpine AG is a large steel concern (founded as the "Hermann Göring Werke" during World War II) that also dominates large parts of the city and the former "Chemie Linz" chemical group make Linz one of Austria's most important economic centres. Linz is also the home of PEZ — makers of peppermint candy.
Due to its industrial background Linz differs a lot from cities such as Salzburg or Vienna. Coming to Linz visitors will soon realize that the atmosphere is completely different. Nevertheless Linz not only gains its flair from the industry, there are many beautiful spots to visit such as the Pöstlingberg, the Landstraße (a beautiful shopping street), the main square, the castle and numerous other things. Finally Linz is naturally divided by the Danube into two parts (Linz and Urfahr), the latter lying in the outskirts of a beautiful and hilly countryside, called the Mühlviertel.
The most famous people connected to Linz probably are the famous composer Anton Bruckner (Bruckner university), poet Adalbert Stifter, scientist Johannes Kepler (Johannes Kepler University) or Adolf Hitler (wanted Linz to become the main cultural centre of the Third Reich).
2009 Linz is along with Vilnius the European Capital of Culture.

So, late on Thursday evening, the train pulled into Linz Bahnhof at around 6pm. The sun was out, and all the commuters and students from Wien jumped off and raced out of the station. Me and Oliver were looking around like headless chickens. We made our way down to the tram system below, wondering w…

We've been biking now for two days and the scenery along the Danube
river has been amazing. Sometimes it's so nice that we don't quite
think straight. For example, after dipping our feet in the water in
Passau, we began biking down the Danube bike trail towards Austria.
After an hour or so we c…
