Squeaks of rapture Aug 29, 2010
The Kyle of Lochalsh Line, in spite of our low altitudes in the UK compared with much of Europe, can hold its own along with other scenic railways. If you sit quietly as the train progresses you will ake little sense out of the conversation of your fellow passengers - just a sort of hum formed by a blend of various foreign languages. However as you come in isght of the marvellous little village of Plockton, language no longer matters.

Here, the passengers, following an increasingly scenic journey, pastoral at first and then mountainous, come upon a spectacular coastal view across a sea loch and there are oohs, aaahs and wows galore as well as the squeaks of rapture.

As well as providing a lot of income from tourism, the line is extremely useful for local people to do their shopping in the city of Inverness. I am always surprised when the line is described as running from Dingwall to Kyle. Trains run right through from Inverness, whichas wel as being the shopping magnet for the local population, is the obvious connection for rail to southern Scotland and to England.

I recall seeing this line profiled on TV. Interesting that a scenic railway can also serve the local population.
