Lily Hotel Vientiane Reviews
Elegant interior without the 5 star price Oct 18, 2011
I booked a room at this hotel through agoda.com for 2 nights at a total cost of A$34 for a solo traveller in June 2011. Breakfast was included in the price, which was just egg, toast and a cup of coffee (which was surprisingly good).
It was a 4 hour bus ride from Vang Vieng to Vientiane (much more comfortable than the bus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng!). The minibus stopped opposite the Lao National Cultural Hall. From there the hotel is a 10 minute tuk tuk ride. It is right next to the Xang Jieng Chinese Market (aka Lao-Chinese Market). NB I managed to obtain a Vientiane map in Luang Prabang, and that helped in finding the hotel. My travel guide map was limited to the main area around the main tourist attractions.
1. The spacious room on level 4 comprised a double bed, tv, with air conditioning, desk and coat rack
2. Separate bathroom (towel and toiletries provided)
3. 10 minute walk away to the a street where there was a convenience store
4. Free Wi-Fi in the Hotel reception area
5. Friendly speaking staff whose English was ok
1. Stairs to the upper levels
2. The hotel is located north west of the main part of the city (Setthathilat Road and Fa Ngum Road). Eg it is a 25 minute walk to the Presidential Palace, and a 25 minute walk to the Patouxay Monument
3. Wi-Fi in the room was non-existent (although there were routers on level 2)
Overall recommend - recommended for budget solo travellers or couples only who don’t want to stay in a hostel, but don’t want to pay for an expensive 4-5 star hotel.
The hotel is located on a street where the road is red and dusty. It is grand with the interior being the old-style wooden (like those old haunted houses in the movies). I thought it was a nice touch. The room is very spacious, with air conditioning, satellite TV, with a clean bathroom. Wi-Fi was too weak on level 4, but access is available in the lobby area. NB there were also mosquitoes there so insect repellent is essential.
A simple breakfast was also included. The hotel is located near a couple of restaurants, and the Laos/Chinese markets. There are many small convenience stores around the area selling the usual essentials (i.e. food, drinks, toiletries etc). However, the hotel is far from the main attractions such as the royal palace, golden stupa, main fountains, statues and temples. If you enjoy walking, then you can spend a day to see all of the major sites. Otherwise tuk-tuk drivers are everywhere and will shout out to you constantly.
The staff were friendly, but seemed a little bored. Maybe because it was low season, but I did not meet many people from the hotel. However, the staff were kind enough to organise a wakeup call at 3.30am for a 4.00am taxi ride to the airport for my flight to Siem Reap. They also helped me negotiate an upfront price with the taxi driver.
Restaurant Tip : On my walk, I found this 'shop' that sold food. I would not call it a restaurant, because the food was cooked in the kitchen that sat inside a house on the ground floor. There was a sign out the front in English with a menu of the usual Laos cuisine egg fried rice, noodle soup etc. It was opposite the Vientiane Hotel just off Khun Bu Lom. I went there on my second day for another lunch! (refer photos). Cooked fresh by mum, with grandma taking it easy, and daughter watching TV. This is what makes travelling special. Moments where the simple things in life are often the best.
25,000 KIP(A$3) for fried rice with prawn and a fried egg on top, accompanied by a bowl of soup. I splurged and added a pepsi for 5000 KIP (A$.60).
