I had only heard possitive about Lille and it should be a town to be enjoyed. Lille is the 10th largest city in France with its 220.000 inhabitants in the city center and counting the suburbs the total population amounts to 1.2 millions where of 100.000 are students. Every year 400.000 tourist visit this citys tourist office and today I was one of them. Lille has got a vey nice historic centre, with old houses and mansions that look like those of Brussels or Amsterdam.
The city...

I have to start this off by mentioning what I won't miss about London: mean people on the buses and tube. Everyone knows the etiquette: move as far onto the train as possible, sit in just one seat on the bus. But today I saw a girl sit on the aisle seat and put her bag in the other on the bus, and a lady scream at people for not moving in and letting her on the train even when there was no room. Icky. Come on people, have a little consideration.
But I do appreciate on...

We woke up at 10 am Sunday morning, but we stayed in for another hour and half until we left Sanne's place. So at 11.30 am we went to a bakery where you can sit down and ordered 2 pains au chocolat and some coffee. Yes, indeed, we had our breakfast at noon :).
After that we went to the town center. We went towards a beautiful building, the Vieille Bourse, and when we "entered" the patio we saw that it was dedicated to French scientists. On the walls we could read several names we knew,...

I'm now halfway through my third year in Europe and things are constantly still amazing and exciting me. I see that the focus of my travelling has changed and I've grown alot since I first set out. Here's a few things I've been up to recently.

So I arrive in Lille, having been physically harrased by some fat Americans hell bent on going to Venice and determined to splurge and take up more space in the Eurostar terminal than is socially and morally acceptable; and aurally harrased by some precocious little English girl who can only have been trained to whine in such a perfected manner. French children are so much more well behaved. I get off the train and quietly panic. It is the first time I will have couchsurfed with someone, and ...

A month travel as a backpacker from Lille to The Netherlands (Amsterdam, Alkmaar, The Hague, Haarlem, Kinderdijk, Rotterdam) and then to Belgium (Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges and Gant). Lille was European Capital of Culture in 2004 and was a very good chance to see a lot of street art and interesting proposals in the city. I really liked. Amsterdam is such a crazy city, and Brussels, I love it.

Five days left of this trip. I'm sorry to see it ending so soon, but I can't wait to get back home again. We are currently on a train leaving Lille and going to Brugge. We drove out here to Lille after spending some time at Versailles. That was quite cool. So much splendour...Hard to imagine living in such a place. Our train just stopped and it's not actually at a stop and we barely left Lille so I wonder what's going on?Okay. Moving again. Soon as I wrote in that question mark. Talk about weird...

In 1995, my friend Darla and I embarked on, what can only be discribed as a "Whirlwind" tour: Ten countries in eleven days! No, we weren't crazy, we just wanted to get a taste of EVERYTHING! Neither of us had been to the continent before, so we did what we could.

I am totally, utterly lost. I am at the wrong train station and I do not speak French. Surely this is it for me. Surely I will die here, miles from home, and my body will never be found. I am a goner.I check my already dog-eared Eurail timetable, and sure enough, I'm supposed to catch a train in Lille in just under half an hour, but I don't see any departing trains going to the place I'm going at all. Surely this is the station, right? I mean, I got off the Eurostar in Lille, so this must be ...
