Lillafured Overview

Lillafüred, an administrative district of Miskolc, and one of the tourist resorts of the country with the most beautiful natural environment, lies on the eastern edge of the Bükk Mountains, at 350m above sea level, in the valley of stream Szinva, by Lake Hámori surrounded by steep hillsides.
Lillafüred is rich in unique natural values. Inside the hill, opposite Hotel Palota, you can find Szeleta Cave, where a great number of archaeological findings, e.g. eighty-one hundred thousand-year-old chipped flint implements, were discovered. Walking through the hanging garden under the hotel, you can get to Anna Cave, which is a formation of fresh-water limestone (travertine): the limestone precipitated on plants, preserving the imprints of several thousand-year-old leaves and grass. At a few hundred meters from the hotel, just by the main road, opens Szt. István (St. Stephen) Cave, one of the biggest in the region. In 2001 a new imposing entrance building was built at the cave. The total length of the passages is 350m. The dripstone cave formed in old limestone. It consists of large chambers and long passages, which are ornamented with a great variety of dripstone formations. Following the blue tourist sign from Erzsébet sétány (Elizabeth Walk), we can get to the top of the vertical cliff walls at a height of 587m, where a fascinating panorama of the surrounding mountains pleases the eye.
