The Hotel Lido is a small friendly hotel in Passignano sul Trasimeno. It is situated right beside the lake and has an outdoor swimming pool. The restaurant is on stilts above the lake. The food is excellent and they do some traditional Umbrian dishes. The best rooms are high up (4th floor) with lake views. There is a ferry service to various islands and resorts on the lake. The main Rome-Florence-Milan railway runs through Passignano. The railway station is about a seven minute walk from the hotel. The couple who run the cafe at the station are very helpful and speak English. The trains are very reliable. Passignano is small and typically Italian with an old part dating from the 12th century. It is easy to travel to Florence, Rome, Assisi, Perugia, Siena, Orvieto and other cities/towns in Umbria and Tuscany. There are lots of traditional hilltop villages nearby such as Cortona (the scene for the film and book 'Under the Tuscan Sun' - recommended), San Gimignano, Montepulciano and countless others.
We flew to Rome, hired a car and drove up to Passignano (approx 3 hour drive). The staff in the hotel are really fiendly and like you to speak Italian if you can. The manager, Giorgio, has a handshake that will crush your hand (He is very friendly). The restaurant manager, Nicola, is also very friendly - especially if you try to speak some Italian.
