Cheap nasty hostel Mar 21, 2011
We booked this hostel as it described itself as a good and clean place to stay in Lhasa whilst being centrally located. The part about centrally located is true. The hostel is near all the main tourist attractions e.g. a 10 min walk to Potala and Barkhor street. However, the hostel is the dirtiest one that we have stayed in in all of our travels in Asia, Europe and the USA. Further, the rooms are not organized in such a way so that you have a window. Instead there is a corridor from which you enter the rooms which means that you have no privacy or a sense of security. The rooms are extremely dirty with dust, dirt and leftovers from previous guests. The linen is not changed after a guest leaves but are instead saved for the next guest. The same goes with towels. The bathrooms are painted in black so as to cover up... everything. We feel that anyone who puts health and cleanliness as one of their top criteria when searching for accommodation should avoid this hostel. In fact, there is a nice hotel (LS- lucky snow) with double ensuite prices matching those of this hostel that is nice a clean.

Yes, it was booked through an agency. But at that time it was still possible for tourists to travel to Lhasa through Chengdu, and book hostels in Lhasa through several hostels in Chengdu before leaving.

This was what most people I met did, they got help from other hostels at Chengdu, for a small fee I'm sure.

Schpoonman, I had a quick question. Since independent travel is not possible in Lhasa, or within Tibet at this moment in time, how did you end up in a hostel? Was it booked through an agent with whom you already had a tour? Slightly confused, any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated!
