Levoča, Spišský Hrad etc. Spisske Podhradie Reviews
One of my favourite regions in Europe Sep 25, 2003
It's listed on the Unesco World Heritage list as "Levoča, Spišský Hrad and the Associated Cultural Monuments", but that was too long to enter here.
I love Slovakia as a whole, and after the magnificent High Tatra mountains, the Spiss area is the part of the country I would recommend most.
Spissky Hrad is the largest (ruined) castle in Slovakia, and certainly worth the trip. The nearby town of Spisska Kapitula was less interesting imho. The guidebooks rave about it, but it's basically just a few pretty houses like you can find in most small towns in the area.
Levoca is a lovely medeaval town, also well worth a visit, though I prefer nearby Kezmarok.
If you prefer nature over culture, there is also the Slovensky Raj (Slovak Paradise) national park. A lot of the trails here have been "improved" with metal railings, steps, chains and rickety bridges. Which can be fun, like a big adult playground, but takes away a bit of the idea of being in "real nature".
All of these places are easy daytrips from both Poprad and Kosice.
