Ribeiro Frio, Portugal
Levada Balcões Ribeiro Frio Reviews
One of levadas with a beautiful viewpoint and finches to be fed from your hand Dec 08, 2012
A nice walk in the central Eastern part of Madeira. You arrive to a town called Ribeiro Frio and go to the path leading to Balcões - viewpoint. You follow a 'levada' (watering canal for fields as Madeira is of volcanic origin, so these canals still help to bring water to the fields on some places) through the woodland. I found interesting, that the woods look very 'Continental', if you consider, that the island is not too far from the African coast.
The walk is not very long, just 1,5 km (about 1 mile), but the table was showing, that you should make it within 1 hour and 30 minutes - well, if you walk by a snail pace, otherwise it is about just 20 minutes - that was really funny... :p
Once you approach the viewing place, you can see the hills around, as well as the Atlantic ocean in the distance.
A tip for you!!! Don't forget to take a piece of bread or some plain biscuits, as this place is the one, where you can feed the finches. They even sit down and can get fed from your palm! I couldn't believe that - such an amazing thing. Just spread your palm with crumbs on it and wait - you will see...
