Letterkenny is the main urban centre in Donegal. Until recently dubbed the fastest growning town in the EU. Letterkenny takes its name from the Irish " Leitir Ceanainn " - meaning the "Hillside of the O'Cannons" - the O'Cannons being the last of the ancient chieftains of Tir Conaill. The last 10 years (and the end of the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland just 15 miles away) have seen the town grow from a sleepy main street to a vibrant modern centre. Letterkenny is a great jumping off point for exploring the county with nowhere more than 1.5 hrs from the town (assuming you drive like me!) There are numerous bars and several 'big city' standard night clubs if that's your thing. The county museum, the theatre and the brand new regional cultural centre all offer stimulating and often Donegal-focused events and productions. Only 20 miles from Derry in Northern Ireland, Letterkenny is well served with bus but the short-sighthdness of public officials saw the rail lines pulled up, so sorry, no trains. The nearest airport is City of Derry, about 25 miles due east. Also Carrickfin which is 35 miles west near the Gaeltacht town of Annagry
