Letterfrack Overview

Letterfrack is a small town in the Connemara region of Co. Galway, Ireland.It is close to the entrance to the Connemara National Park and contains the visitor centre for this geographical area. It was founded in the mid-nineteenth century by a Quaker couple who came to Ireland from Bradford, England in order to offer help to the people of the area during the time of the Great Irish Famine.
The area is renowned for the St. Joseph's Industrial School where problem young boys were sent to be taught by the Christian Brothers. It was opened in 1887 and became known for neglect, physical and sexual abuse. It closed in 1974.
The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology is also located in Letterfrack.
