Les Café des Epices Marseille Reviews
Surely one of the best restaurants in Marseille Jul 22, 2015
N43°17.732' E5°21.991' this very small restaurant behind the old Hôtel de Ville on the northern side of the old port, doubled the amount of seats by enclosing its outside terrace. It is still a small restaurant with enough space for two waiters and a small bathroom size kitchen for four kitchen staff. Try to find your way to the single toilet.
Reservations are mandatory because it is a Lonely Planet top choice. The restaurant fills up quickly around 8 o'clock. The blackboard menu offers three appetisers, three main courses and three desserts. There is not much more space in the kitchen to prepare.
Our question was where space comes as a premium; does very fine French cooking comes in Le Café des Épices as standard? Yes, it clearly does during our visit in April 2015.
The country duck with mashed potato and frites penise tasted really well. Gastronomic quality. The Dorado fish filet was excellent. Nice taste, texture and herbs. Especially the black spaghetti. Their suggestion of the Domaine des Terres Dorées, Bourgogne, 2013 red wine made our dinner complete. Simply perfect. We finished in style with a plateau du fromage and a glass of white port.
The interior is not so important in this very small restaurant. The service was very good. Every staff member teamed in to translate into English. The price was €93: very reasonable for the whole dining experience. Le Café des Épices is a truly excellent small restaurant for truly delicate gastronomic pleasure. This Lonely Planet top choice is very much recommended.
