Huge Nature Resort...nothing more Feb 20, 2012
frankly, i am not a fan of this resort. not because it isn't good in any way, its just a subjective preference. you know, i'm all for nature and leaves and shrubbery, but fighting off monkeys on the way to my room and running into black cats in the night randomly on a paved sidewalk just leaves you hoping that nothing more dramatic like a bush spider or snake pops out at you at some point. way too dramatic if you ask me.
its clearly a well-thought out resort built on a hillside that extend right down into the beach but its quite a walk from the rooms to any part of the resort. service levels are rather poor, it takes forever to get room service delivered and the food is kinda bland. plus, on check out, i almost missed my bus cos i was waiting for a porter to come help me with my bags to the reception! needless to say, i eventually moved all three heavy bags by myself in the hot kenya morning sun. clearly i'm still bitter about that :)...although they apologized profusely.
and then there's the monkeys. trust me when i say to you that monkeys are better off on TV...in real life they are a living menace. they're such a nuisance that the hotel has signs warning you against feeding the monkeys, however they don't tell you that even carrying food and minding your business will provoke an attack by these monkeys who are everywhere!!! i saw them attack a male caucasian man and it was not a pretty sight. someone else left balcony doors open and came out of the bathroom to find monkeys eating out her fruit basket right in her room!!! like seriously?!! i swear its like living in the wild but with cable tv. :)
to make it worse, there was only paid wifi and even that wasn't excellent, the scenery does not have on-the-water rock formations and their beachboys are a lot more in your face although the women selling scarves on the beach are delightful. getting there by road from mombasa is quite a drive and you go through amazing plantations and a drive-on ferry that is quite the experience (especially at closing time with all those beautiful kenyan people!) so yeah, overall, just a nice place to spend the night or a few nights but don't expect to be blown away or anything. i would only go back there if i honestly cannot help it, but thats not to say you wont like it yourself!
