West Yorkshire's largest city May 17, 2011
Strange as it may seem, Leeds was not the county town of the West Riding of Yorkshire nor the seat of the council for the newer county of West Yorkshire. This is clearly the result of its comparatively late rise to prominence in the industrial revolution compared with the longer history and the bishopric of Wakefield.

Second and last of the negatives, Leeds Castle has absolutely no connection with the City of Leeds, being in Southern England.

In spite of the above Leeds does have places with a far longer history than that of industrial textile production. For example Kirkstall Abbey dates back to the 12th century. However its importance now is a function neither of its older history nor of textile history.

It has two universities and is a major industrial and commercial centre, claimed by its inhabitants and the many who flock there to be one of the best cities for shopping in England and its nightlife is almost legendary. I am rather too old to gat advantages from that. I have two main reasons for visiting Leeds. The first is to visit my youngest son, who works at the Department of Health there and has lived in the Meanwood area for some years. The second is to watch sport - both Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos Rugby League team being magnets for me.Probably two or thee times a year we go to theatrical productions at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Why only 4 stars? It's too big for me and, having worked there as well as throughout Yorkshire, I found people there rather on the arrogant side - they have a lot to be proud of but the pride can be excessive.
