Leeds and Liverpool Canal Apr 01, 2017
Leeds and Liverpool Canal is Britain's longest single waterway canal. The 127 miles stretch starts from Leeds, crosses the Pennines and finishes in Liverpool. The canal passes through Crossflatts, a village between Bingley and Keighley in West Yorkshire. We finished at Crossflatts, a short walk north from the Bingley Five Rise Locks, on our recent walk on the canal from Rodley.

It was built in 1816, engineered by John Longbotham (with involvement from James Brindley and Robert Whitworth). The aim of the canal was to transport goods quickly and economically from city to city. Today the canal is used for leisure purposes such as boating, walking, running and cycling on the tow paths.

May aim is to walk, in stages, the whole of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Further information about the canal can be found on the website.
