Lee Vining is a dinky village at the southern lakeshore of Mono Lake, California. Total population is about 500. It is a former mining camp that had been founded in 1852. The village itself is of no relevance. But its location gives the place a kind of significance. Lee Vining is a perfect starting point for trips to Mono Lake and the ghost town of Bodie. It also serves as a stopover for tourists travelling from Nevada to Yosemite NP. It is the closest 'city' to the east entrance. Besides the campground and Motels some restaurants, service stations, a market, churches, and other visitor services are available.

The waters are incredibly clear, and you can see the gases bubbling up through the shallows that will eventually become new tufa formations. There are vast clouds of alkaline flies that live around the lake. They stay close to the ground (they live on the minerals in the soil around the lake so they don't bite or fly around you) and if you walk slowly through them great swarms of...

We climbed in the SUV and headed north up 395 to the town of Lee Vining and Mono Lake to see the lake, tufa mounds, birds and flies. Cindy had never been to Mono before and the last time that I was there was after a backpacking trip with my long lost friend Steve Vogel right before I took off on my post-college eighteen month travel adventure. We had been backpacking in the Sierra for a week and were filthy, hungry and tired but decided to drive north to see the lake before h...

Pick up the kids (our two chihuahuas) and head for home. Back to our own bed!
Up early, down for one final breakfast at the hotel, checked out of our suite and loaded the car and off to pick up our pups. On the road towards home about 8am, well ahead of schedule.
We had taken the Tioga Pass route once before going from home to Reno, but this time we are doing it in reverse. So from Reno we took Hwy 395 south through Carson City, a several smaller towns, for 135 miles to Mono Lake and Lee V...
