Great craziness (at the Freedom Party) May 09, 2011
Well, this is a one-in-a-million kind of venue. I went there for a "Freedom party" and all the music was from 1990-2000ish. It was great. There was classic hip-hop and R&B from out the woodworks! We got there early and didn't pay to get in, but we had to wait a while for the crowd to kick in, but once it did, I couldn't stop my feet from moving and my neck from cranking. The music was awesome, the crowd was great and the DJ was off the hook! We stayed until it closed and went in search of a 24-hour diner afterwards.

However, you can't just show up here and expect the same, you REALLY have to check the website for their events. I just drove past it last weekend and everyone in line had on black, was semi-dressy, a little bit of an older crowd than me, and there was a really long line. Another time, a friend I had gone with the first time, went back for a different event and she reported that she was crammed into a small room and was being charged extra to get onto the main dance floor and so she left.

Officially, this place is a "multimedia art cabaret" that was founded by musicians on the site of the historic Village Gate. It is suppose to be a space for the fusion of different arts (music, film, theater, dance, fine art). It can be eclectic, but you really just have to go online and see whose performing or what event is going on if you're in NY.

During the day, they have tables and serve food and at night, it can be a crazy dance floor or other arena for whatever.

It's in a great spot in the Village so you can take the train, a cab, or maybe even be lucky enough to find a parking space.

awesome place with a lot of variety and a great crowd Jul 24, 2011
This is a great place to check out if you are in NYC for a week or so and want to check out some new fun music groups. If you go on their website they give you the week line up far in advance and the cover is never more than $20 bucks unless it is a special presentation.

The crowd is great and it is in an area with a bunch of great food, bars etc..
