This is actually part of the SNCF, the French national rail system. However Le Petit Train Jaune aka 'the Canary' is something special. It ran originally from about 1900 between Villefranche de Conflent and Mont Louis and was later extended to Latour du Carol. This latter is an extraordinary place today with a station out of all proportion to the little village but it was once the French frontier station on the way to Barcelona (Spain).

It has the sort of gradients that would previously hae needed rack and pinion but it has always been powered by multile units spread over the train. The building of the line with all its tunels and viaducts was quite an engineering triumph.

If you want a trip on the best part of the line for its own sake, rather than to get anywhere particular, I would sugest that you do the return trip from Font-Romeu to Olette.
