Le Domaine Des Mascareignes Saint-Paul Reviews
Domaine des Mascareignes Oct 13, 2011
Hmmm, what to say about Le Domaine des Mascareignes? Foremost, it is a pretty good deal if you need a place to stay along the west coast of Reunion. So long as you can get beyond the odd combination of visual opulence with a marked lack of amenities you should do just fine with this place.
Seems the issue was high hopes and they just overbuilt the place. Unable to support the number of rooms, management simply decided to limit services but keep the doors open. What this means is that you get well-equipped rooms with plenty of floor space (our room had a complete kitchen and fridge), but a lack of services. There is no room service when you are checked in, you even have to empty your trash cans before you depart! Forget about getting complimentary soap or shampoo, and please remember to pack along your own towel if you care to dry off after bathing.
Not to mention drying off if you take a dip in the pool. The pool is languid, large and luxurious, (surrounded by palm trees, there was always a delightful cacophony of tropical birds chattering away), but having to pack your own towel along on vacation taints the experience. There is also a spacious, fully equipped snack bar adjoining the pool area, continuing the dichotomy.
The biggest caution is just the limitations on service. There are narrow windows for check in (I believe it was 2-6PM in the afternoon) and they lock up at 9PM each night. We got locked out the first night but discovered you can walk around the lobby to get inside without any problems. This means that associates who might be able to assist you are not around much, but most spoke good English which worked for me (this was better than places where someone was always available but only spoke French, lol!). More important, they were genuinely caring and aimed to satisfy your needs.
Wi-fi is available, but only in the lobby, and even though it does not sit right on the ocean, the beach and all of its retail establishments (including a good selection of bars and restaurants) are mere steps away. If nothing else, it was entertaining to stroll the grounds and explore all the abandoned hallways. An interesting place which has its faults, but remains a good value.
