Lazy Pirate Sports Bar & Grille Carolina Beach Reviews
It Arrr a Sports Barrr Sep 15, 2012
Now that we are beyond Labor Day and beach crowds have dissipated, your faithful reporter is free to wander the streets of Carolina Beach and keep you current on the wonderful dive bars there. Although it has probably been around for three years, this is the newest addition to the town’s line-up of fine drinking establishments and whenever we drive past I always tell my wife and daughter “we could have dinner at the Lazy Pirate.” Well this evening I made good on the threat and we had a fun time.
A fairly standard sports bar, the Pirate features plenty of room, including spacious porches front and back – the one in the back is covered and home to three pool tables, the front is largely an open deck for eating. Televisions are omnipresent. We were seated at the last open booth in the corner, the only one which didn’t have a personal TV screen (which is really overkill as plenty of big screens are readily visible wherever you sit). Both porches are similarly equipped with viewing privileges, and I was tickled to discover a strategically positioned screen when I visited the rest room --- you can sit on the throne and not miss a single pitch in the big ballgame!
The menu was similarly typical: burgers, wings and such. My daughter ordered a dozen medium wings and gave them a single thumbs up – tasty, but not exceptional. I couldn’t talk her into ordering the 100 boneless wings for $76.99, but my wallet is relieved. My wife had a burger which also merited a passing grade, but again no accolades. I had a salad and a cup of their New England Seafood Chowder, which was a bit salty but actually quite good. Service was fast and friendly and I have no doubt the good times roll as the night wears on. Entertainment seems to be a prominent feature of the Lazy Pirate, and I was impressed with the collection of corn hole boards on display (this is a game where you try to toss sandbags into a small hole).
Closing note is that the Lazy Pirate seems to be under common ownership with Drifter’s Reef, the next door motel providing cheap accommodations (perfect selection if you have a dog as Rover is welcome to stay in your room). If you need a cheap getaway, Drifter’s Reef + Lazy Pirate = a killer combo!
